Polka dot dresses

by Juliemara

I really don’t know how it happen but Talia and Jordan went and got big before they were invited to enough fancy events to wear all their pretty little dresses. So my sweet nanny dresses them in their finest for outings to the zoo, play group and dinner with the family. Sure I get sad when they get greasy food on the fronts, but it’s a lot sadder when they grow out of all these dresses without ever having a chance to wear them. Se la vie if a stain is meant to be then it’s meant to be. I can’t save every little dress for a special occasion because, seriously, how many special occasions does a one year old have? not too many, so why not make everyday y a special occasion, hey it’s a good life lesson any way. I use to live in New York City, while I was there I was invited to a party, just a regular party at some ones apartment, but this party had a theme “Black Tie”. I think getting ready with my friends and walking through the streets in a fancy gown was half the fun of the night, we all felt so good being dressed to the nines. Try it some time, get all dressed uopand go to waffle house at midnight, no one has to know you didn’t come from from swanky party.

Using your best judgement

by Juliemara

Being a parent, especially a new one is an on going lesson in using your best judgment. I struggle constantly with how much freedom to give my girls. Where should I draw the line between letting them explore and keeping them safe.

Sure I could expertly baby proof every square inch of our home and make sure that nothing except baby tested and certified toys get into their hands, but I don’t think that’s the best way to raise independent, creative children. And despite the fact that the girls have toys that are safe and developmentally appropriate within arms reach at all times they would always prefer to get their hands on something new.

I read in a parenting book to try, as much as possible, to only say “no” to a child if they are in real danger of hurting themselves. It’s a way of keeping the word “no” a serious and meaningful one. Jordan is really good at listening when either of us says no, it kinda startles her. But she was always the one to jump at the slightest noise, even when she was a brand new infant. She is also a very cautious and careful child so she doesn’t get herself into dangerous situations too often.

Talia on the other hand is a little dare devil. She will jump off anything and everything. She automatically assumes that if we are within arms reach we will catch her. She is always climbing and falling and hurts herself many times in a day.

When you have a new baby the last thing on your mind is the day that they start running, usually with a small object in their hand, and then they fall. The thing is, it hurts little knuckles a lot when you land on them because the little hand was busy clenching a tiny toy and there is no way to prevent it. They will fall, they will get hurt and you, as the parent, just have to try not to freak out.

The girls have lots if toys that could present a hazard, we try as much as possible to supervise them when they are playing with these toys such as the Melissa and Doug stacker with its wooden stick or the drum sticks from their music set or even the bristle blocks that when stepped on hurt a good bit.

I took this video of the girls this past weekend. I can’t believe we are here already, they take turns so nicely until the very end when it starts to get ugly. But for a while they each take their turn. Talia starts out with a stick in her hand, which I took away because eyes are really hard to replace. But the whole time I was filming this I was saying to myself Talia, please sit before you go down the slide. And, begging for those little rubber soled shoe to not get stuck on the plastic slide. And for no one to fall off while climbing up and for none of the other hundred things that an go wrong in a second to happen. If you turn the volume way up you can probably hear me gasp a few times.

Oh, and to all the stranger that wished us good luck when they saw us out with our infant twins, we will take it now, we need it for their toddler years.

Funny babies

by Juliemara

This really is a great age, the wobbly walk, the adorable babbling and mostly watching your once completely helpless infant learn to do things for them selves, make decisions, have an opinion. Talia and Jordan play so well together they are always making each other laugh and look to each other for approval in almost everything they do…

Thanksgiving Day

by Juliemara

I love Thanksgiving, it’s probably my favorite holiday. 20121122-202628.jpg20121122-211013.jpg20121122-211029.jpg

20121122-211107.jpgI love it for several reasons, since its not a religious holiday there are no services to attend. It’s not that I mind the services, it’s just nice to get to spend the whole day off enjoying free time with family. And it’s a great excuse to dress babies up in their fancy dresses from Safta. They are from Zara (similar here).20121122-202357.jpg20121122-202651.jpg20121122-202603.jpg20121122-202416.jpg20121122-202758.jpg20121122-202738.jpg20121122-202428.jpg20121122-202453.jpg20121122-202618.jpgAnother reason Thanksgiving is a favorite of mine is because we spend it out in the country at my sister lake house, which is beautiful and relaxing and always one of my favorite places to be. OK, its not exactly out in the country, its more like a country club, but the town is far away from a big city. 20121122-202815.jpg20121122-202440.jpg20121122-202348.jpg20121122-202323.jpg20121122-202329.jpg

20121122-211018.jpgThen there is the fact that Thanksgiving is always within a week of my birthday, so I always get to celebrate my birthday with my family.

And last is the deserts! 20121122-202259.jpg20121122-202306.jpg20121122-202312.jpg20121122-211024.jpgI love pumpkin and pecan pie, whip cream in anything is perfect and there is always enough chocolate left over to last for days. The actual meal is always tasty too, but it’s the deserts that keep bringing me back each year.

So that’s a wrap for thanksgiving 2012, let the games be watched.
I hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving and spent it in company that you enjoyed. I hope you ate enough gravy to last you until next year and I hope that each day you remember that you can be thankful for the people who make your life special.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Things are changing around here…

by Juliemara

Things are changing around here. The girls keep getting bigger and smarter and my blog is moving to a new home. the hope is that you wont feel a difference but posts may be a little sporadic for a while and the look will change some. but the cool thing is this blog will be much more fun! to keep up on all the updates during this transition time be sure to LIKE the Smilingwatermelon Facebook page. ill post never before seen pictures and videos there especially on days that the blog is having technical issues.

These sweet baby girls are 13 months old!

I was told recently by a coworker that after a year counting months is annoying to hear about. This makes me think I should stop coloring my monthly chalkboard and taking the white couch pictures. What do you think? Should I keep going with the monthly pictures or move on to something new? I wouldn’t mind the extra time to knock out a new project or two over this next year, but as my readers, will you miss those pictures? Should I keep counting? Until when? 24, 36, 48 months?

Counting or not they keep growing, they are walking (but not with out the more than just occasional boom into a wall/chair table right onto their face/head/tushie), they are babbling, and they are using their gestures to tell us what they want, or don’t.

It’s not easy to keep two toddlers busy all day. Sure they nap, usually two times a day for an hour, maybe more, sometime only once, maybe for two hours. But two hours goes by quick when you are cleaning up after the morning mess. Luckily we have a fantastic nanny who always seems to get everything done and keep the girls busy and learning all day long. She is even teaching them to sleep on little cots so that one day when we are out during nap time or sleeping somewhere new they will feel comfortable to sleep somewhere other than their cribs.

The girls nanny uses a great online resource for fun things to do with the girls on days when they don’t have music class or story time. Macaroni kid lists all the events in your neighborhood for kids, all the details are there to help you choose the best events for the age and most of them are free!

She also takes the girls to indoor playgrounds when it’s too cold/hot or rainy to play outside. Also, until a toddler is a good walker most playgrounds are not really practical with a wood chip or even dirt ground cover. Most I the indor play places like Kangazoom or Catch Air, have a cover charge, even for the babies, but discounts can always be found on Groupon, Living Social, Sweet Jack and on their individual Facebook pages.

I hope you are doing something fun with your kiddies this weekend! I’d love to hear about it!

Seeing the world through their eyes..

by Juliemara

Seeing the world through their eyes is one of the greatest parts of being a parent. Children get excited from everything, everything is new, everything is interesting.  A child can look at something and create a whole new world within that one thing, maybe it’s a toy, maybe it’s the way the shadows cross the edge of their car seat as they ride down the road.  Expereinceing this kind of excitemnt throughI am a very amateur photographer, if time would allow it I would take as many photography and photo editing courses as I could. Some people just have the natural ability to capture moments perfectly, I don’t.  But when I am lucky enough to capture a moment, especially a moment when one of my children discovers something for the first time, I melt. I could stare at these moments forever. But I don’t because their are other moments to be lived. But I know that a year or five or ten or thirty years from now I will look back at these images, of these moments that came went so fast and smile.  I will be so happy to be able to see them as I remember being there.
These photos were taken one Sunday afternoon at a friends place on the river. There were ducks in the water it was the first time seeing ducks for the girls and their Abba feeding them.twinstwins

Guess What We Are!

by Juliemara

Dressing up a baby in any cute outfit is really fun, but when you get to put them in a ridiculous themed outfit and they are a pair, it just makes it all the better. And how appropriate that I would find (for under $20 each, including shipping) these adorable watermelon costumes for the girls from The Children’s Place.

See the flower on Talia’s head, Jordan has one too, but she pulled it out the second I put it in. It’s by her left leg. Is it ok to glue bows to your kids hair?

Just kidding.

And there goes Talia’s flower

The tights were part of the package and we plan to be wearing those all winter long. The long sleeve onsie underneath was a bought separately.  Scroll down some to see the hat.

The hat is cute, but it’s really hard to get on, maybe the girls have, um watermelons? for heads. haha, sorry, I had to.

I think they make pretty cute little watermelons. We won’t be going door to door this year. While I would love a giant bag of assorted candy to eat over the course of the next month until people start baking for the holidays, I really don’t need the calories and the girls are only one, So they don’t eat candy. It would just be really awkward having to do the trick or treating holding our babies in one hand and candy bag in the other. Picturing that in my head. Yeah, no.

Instead we will be going to a friends house where there will be about a half a dozen cute one year olds dressed up for their second Halloween and their parents oggoling over them. Don’t worry I’ll take a picture of the cuteness and share it with you.

By the way, the girls would rather eat bows than candy anyway. That pink bag with the dots, it’s our bow bag. It came with this cute baby toiletry set. And the girls just love putting those tiny little bows in their mouths until they are sopping wet. Yum. Not to worry though, they have yet to swallow one.

Happy Halloween Everyone! Please link your favorite costumes below so I can see what everyone was!

Happy Birthday Jordan and Talia

by Juliemara

20121012-131002.jpgBaby girls, today kinda snuck up on me. Sure I knew it was coming but all of the sudden here it is. You are one, one year old today. My little wiggly babies are now little waddling girls. I never wanted to be the parent that called their not so much babies any more baby, so I will try from now on to call you my girls even though you will always be my babies (at least until you stopping waking up at night and crying until I hold you.) I was a pretty independat and adventurous kid and I hope you two grow up to adventurous and fearless. You are already amazing us with your climbing ability, now you just need to learn what goes up must come down, hopefully feet first.

20121012-131033.jpgI have had so much fun taking care of you for the past year, your abba and I may not have been perfect at it sometimes, but I hope you two didn’t mind. I hope you had a fun first year. I tried to show you as many new things as possible in this short year. And while we have decades of fun ahead of us this first year was important to me and I loved every minute of it.

20121012-131111.jpgYou went from being wrinkly little helpless people to opinionated, smart, funny and friendly little toddlers. At a year old you can walk fairly well, as in across the room before you fall down, you each have six teeth, four on top and two on bottom, you both have lots of curls. Every now and then you repeat a word perfectly, you give me your spoon when I ask for it, you know how to balance on one foot when getting undressed for your bath, which you love so much. You love animals, pictures of them, stuffed ones, even the real ones. You love music and you dance to the rhythm in the cutest little way, you love playing outside.

20121012-131121.jpgJordan you are a mommas girl and Talia you are quite obsessed with your Abba. I’m not sure how or why that happened but all the parents of twins said that it would. It’s ok, we love you each with all our hearts.

It was the most amazing thing to watch you change before our eyes this past year, I miss the little babies that we brought home but I love the little girls who crawl to be in my lap more than I could imagine possible. I can’t wait to see what this next year brings for each of you, for your freindship, for our family.

Happy first birthday girls, mommy and Abba love you and we are proud of you every day.
