Snow Day!

Unlike our first snow storm in GA this winter that started with seven hours in the car and two days at my sisters with only the clothes on our back this time around we were snug as a bug in a rug at home.
Tuesday started out with a snow sleet mix in the morning so we all decided to stay home for the day. That night the ice started falling and continued all day Wednesday. Again we stayed home and inside. Wednesday night the icy drops finally turned to snowflakes and coated our little part of the world in a winter wonderland that was just enough to have some fun in.

After being so ill prepared the first time around I bought the girls snow pants and snow boots to have on hand just in case, I’m so glad I did. Even if it’s the only time they wear them it was well worth the money to have for this perfect day. I got it all on super clearance from Lands End and hopefully the pants will still fit them next year since I bought a size up.

We played in the two inches of snow for more than an hour. The girls built a snowman, threw snow balls, ate icicles, made snow angles and jumped off everything they could find.

Back inside we carried on with snow day fun and made hot chocolate with marshmallows and decorated sugar cookies for valentines day.

I’m ok with only having a snow day once a year, it gives us southerners an excuse to pack it full of winter traditions. By mid afternoon all the snow was gone and most of the ice had disappeared. Two days from now it’s going to 60 degrees outside but I know Talia and Jordan will be talking about their Snowmam (how the girls say snowman) with a carrot for a nose for some time to come.

Destin Vacation continued…

Finally!

I definitely won’t be wining any blog awards any time soon. Moments to write these little stories recounting the happenings of our lives are hard to come by. I’m so tired by the time the girls go to bed I don’t even have the energy to get ready for bed myself let alone write coherent dialogue that may some how be interesting or informative.

But I am determined to share the rest of the vacation we took over the holidays with you. We had such a fun time hanging out together and being around our friends. Watching how much the girls enjoyed the company of our friends children was great entertainment. But when you have toddlers and cold weather activities are a necessity. In addition to packing a suitcase of clothes I also packed a bin of activities for the kids to do.

We rode bikes indoors, painted, made beaded necklaces, decorated $1 wood picture frames from Michaels, made crowns for everyone, did some yoga, colored and stickered, had target practice and played with play-doh.

We also baked all kinds of yummy treats, cookies, brownies and muffins. My kids love pouring, mixing and helping break the eggs. Watched a little tv and everyday we took a dip in the heated pool in the back yard. We have two little fishes on our hands.

We also spent some time exposing the attractions near our house. There was a great outlet mall with a fun little playground, a multi purpose entertainment village with another fun playground and several restaurants we visited.

We will be sticking close to home for the next few months. Big changes coming, I can’t wait to see how Talia and Jordan react to a having a baby in their lives. I’m however they take it, it will make us laugh a little, they are the two funniest people I know.

Family Trip to Destin, FL

Christmas is a favorite time of ours to take a trip. We don’t actually celebrate the holiday but we still get the day off. My husbands business is very busy up until the Christmas holiday so as soon as Christmas eve arrives things slow down and we can take off as a family to anything we like for as long as my job will let me be away. This year we decided to go back to Destin, Florida, we went last year as well. And while last year wasn’t exactly our ideal vacation we did things a little differently this time. Last year we stayed in a hotel at a resort for two nights then drove to visit with friends in Alabama. This year we stayed for over a week in a rented house.

Destin Vacation Rental Ocean Views

The house was a perfect rental for the four families with seven kids between them that shared it. Six bedrooms, five and a half baths, golf cart, heated pool, great neighborhood, walking distance to the beach and close to great shopping. I loved this house so much I felt like I needed to send the owners a gift for letting us stay there!

It wasn’t warm on the gulfs edge but it was warmer than in Atlanta. We were able to spend some time on the beach playing in the sand. The girls were so cute digging and jumping and running through the beautiful white sands of the beach. It was so fine and white it looks a little like snow, but I’ll take sand over snow any day. One of the spots we visited was the Crab Trap restaurant which had a great playground structure right on the sand.

The girls had a great time playing with the other kids we vacationed with. They got to stay up late, sleep in and sit at the eat at bar for most of their meals. There was plenty of down time indoors so I brought an arsenal of indoor activities to keep kids entertained. And the pool heated to bath tub temps was a great way to spend chilly mornings. Look out for more photos to come.

A Whole Slew of Celebrations

by Juliemara

20131129-220445.jpgkids_channukkakids_channukkakids_channukka kids_channukkakids_channukkakids_channukkakids_channukkakids_channukkakids_channukkakids_channukkakids_channukkakids_channukkakids_channukkakids_channukkakids_channukkakids_channukka

This Past week was the tri-fecta of celebration in our would. It snuck up on me and for yet another year I felt ill prepared for most of it. First, there was Wednesday, not only the first night of Chanukah, but it was also my Birthday, so their were two sets of candles to light. I’m not a big birthday person I just enjoy being with family and the guarantee of cake that I will enjoy. With Thursday brought the second night of Chanukah and of course, Thanksgiving. While there are no candles for Thanksgiving the combination of the two holidays, dubbed Thanksgivakkah, which I don’t really like as a name because I cant spell or pronounce it very well, made for a very festive day all around. And Friday, the third night of Chanukah also meant we celebrated Shabbat, which in our family is like a mini Thanksgiving each week.

Talia and Jordan have been learning about Chanukah at school, from myself and their nanny for the past couple of weeks. They were pretty familiar with all the important aspects of the holiday by the time wednesday came around. And it really only took one night for them to learn that after candles comes gifts. Their excitement for opening presents almost makes you feel that extravagant gifts would be worth it, almost. Talia and Jordan get mostly small things , stickers, books, etc. My parents give them some toys and my husband parents bought them tri-cycles, but these two have pretty much everything, so we try to keep it low key.

Our Thanksgiving traditions have changed over the years. When I was very young we would travel to Atlanta from North Carolina every year to spend the holiday with my Mom brothers family. In our college years making this trip as a family became impossible with school and studying schedules so we would spend the holiday with my Dads family locally in North Carolina. For the past half decade we have been spending the holiday at a lake house outside of Atlanta. It’s easier for all of us with the little ones to be in oneĀ  place where they can all play together and be a little free outside. We are usually joined by some extended family and friends for the main event. My favorite part of Thanksgiving is our dinner service schedule, we do appetizers at 1pm, supper at 4pm and desert at 6pm. The amount of food we are capable of consuming by spreading out the courses over the whole day is quite remarkable. Kudos to my sister for starting this tradition.

And now my favorite holiday (Thanksgiving, just to clarify) has come and gone. These days I always think about what next year at this time will be like in comparison. For one, I will have a 9 month old, my other sister will be here with her family (they take turns with us and the in-laws) and who knows what else the next year will bring, I am thankful for the good that I know is coming and for the surprises that await.

Happy Fourth of July

by Juliemara
07.5.13

20130704-155703.jpg20130704-155627.jpg

We spent the holiday with my parents, sisters and some extended family at my sisters lake house. It was great to be there with everyone because my girls LOVE playing with their cousins. My sister kids 10, 8, 5 can entertain them endlessly and the girls squeal with delight at the fun they have with their big cousins.

While the west coast is dealing with record high temps on the east coast is just won’t stop raining. We have had seveer storms on a regular basis the past few months and today was no different. We got lucky, the clouds broke for a bit in the morning. We got to take a nice long boat ride,Fourth_of_july

Talia and Jordan really enjoyed it.

Fourth_of_julyFourth_of_july

But by the time we were heading back the rain started falling, we had a sun shade that helped some, but we were pretty wet by the time we got home.

20130704-155711.jpg

After a couple quick rain showers the sun came out again, we all headed down to the dock for a swim. Talia and Jordan played in the water for a few minutes then decided it wasn’t for them. The bigger cousins were jumping off the dock into the water. I was siting near the edge and another grown up was in the water just below me. Talia walked up the edge an pretended like she was going to jump, we all said good job, nice try. The next thing I know she is flying off the dock and landing in the water. I should mention we have a strict rule that kids are required to wear a buckled life vest at all times on the dock and boats, no questions or exceptions.
She was quite startled but totally fine, she didn’t even swallow any water, she wasn’t about to jump again but enjoyed getting everyone else to jump in on her command. The good thing about the storm/sun/storm/sun you never get bored of any one thing and the day seems to last forever. Which I am ok with.

Hope you enjoyed your holiday! Do you have a holiday tradition or do you celebrate in a new way each year?

I had grand ideas of the girls coloring cards for Fathers Day for my husband and I was looking for a cake decorating class to sign him up for that he has been asking for. Well the cards never for made and he went and signed up for the class himself. He is getting a little something that I know will make him happy.

Babe, you are an Awesome Aba! Our girls love you, so much. So much that they can bear to be in a different room than you if you are home. So much, that they yell and scream your name before falling asleep at night, and first thing when they wake up in the morning. They love their Aba so much that they call me Ama because you are always on their mind. They love pointing out your shoes/shirts/phone/etc around the house and saying Aba, Aba when they spot it. Thank you for all you do for our family. You work so hard to make us all happy, enjoy your day my love.

And a special Happy Father’s Day to the girls Saba and to all the Dads and Dads to be.

Thanks Dad!

by Juliemara
06.16.13

I totally drop the ball on Father’s Day this year, there are no clever gifts, no sentimental hand made cards. I’m a little embarrassed to admit I didn’t even send a card this year. But I have this blog, and I know you read it everyday Dad. So here’s your bee special Dad Father’s Day card.
My Dad helping Talia ride a tricycle for the first time.

You taught me how to ride a bike, plant a seed, organize a closet. You taught me how to make French toast, pop popcorn the old fashioned way and how to buy furniture. Everyday I use the lessons I learned from you, everyday I appreciate you more and more. I love you Dad, Happy Father’s Day to the Beat Dad and Grandaddy in the world.
Love,
Julie

A family photo

by Juliemara

family

It’s a little dark but it’s probably one of the best candid family photos I have ever been a part of. It was a great day about a month ago. My husbands family was in from overseas and his brother from the west coast. Unfortunately his sister wasn’t able to make this visit. We were spending the day at a friends home by the river, it was a sunny and beautiful spring day, not too hot, perfect really. We cooked out, fed the ducks, played in the grass and watched the water flow down the river. I’m glad the warmer weather is hear, I’m looking forward to more days spent outside watching the world go by.

Weekend fun Photos and a Big Thank You!

20130423-113743.jpg

My mom was in town this weekend, I love hearing the stories she tells of her friends who drink their morning coffee with my blog posts each morning. Blogging is a lot of work without much reward. But I don’t do it for the recognition, I do it for down the road.

20130423-113757.jpg

Even now, I will click on a “you may also like” box and read a post I wrote months ago. I know one day when I no longer write I will be glad I can look back and have it all there, categorized and archived forever. But for now, I love writing and I know that my readers love reading because you vote! 20130423-113808.jpg

And because you vote I have stayed on page one of Top Baby Blogs and even moved up recently to #12! Thank you, Thank you! A special thank you to Safta and Saba, Nana and Grandaddy, and Debbie and Susan who are a few of the many who make a point to vote everyday from each of their devices. The biggest compliment you can give a blogger is more exposure, lots of new people have found my blog via Top Baby Blogs.
